Volunteer Spotlight: Gregg Mcelhinney

Q: When and how did you become a motorsports enthusiast?

My father and uncle were both car enthusiasts, and I started reading “Road & Track” as a young child. We lived in the San Francisco bay area, and sports cars of all types were fairly common on the streets there. I started collecting toy cars as a young boy and continued collecting throughout my adult life.

Q: What kind of influence has that had on your life?

I love cars and driving. My love of cars has influenced trips I have taken worldwide. I went to car/toy shows in France and Germany. Last year I attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. I was at the Monterey Car Week, and celebrated my birthday at Laguna Seca. I am active in the Porsche Club of America and have attended every National Parade event since 2006. I enjoy just about anything to do with cars!

Q: What makes volunteering at World of Speed meaningful to you?

The most meaningful part of volunteering is the people that I meet and have had the opportunity to work with. Being around a group of individuals with appreciation of all things in transportation keeps me revved up. The learning that is required, regarding areas of motorsports that I am not so familiar with, is a fantastic way of keeping me fresh and updated.

Q: What is the most memorable experience of your time volunteering?

Working with children with special needs in the museum and experiencing their interest and wonder at our great exhibits.

Q: What do you wish other people knew about World of Speed?

That we have an educational part of World of Speed that most don’t know about. I am so impressed with what we do for high school and community-college students. This hands-on auto-shop education was so important to me in my schooling, and is very uncommon today.

Q: If you could choose any vehicle to be displayed in the museum, what would it be?

A Porsche 917 of any type. I believe that they were incredible machines.

Join Gregg and fellow World of Speed volunteers Mike Pearsall and Andy Frezza on Saturday, March 3, for a volunteer talk session about the world of model car collecting! Hear stories and get advice on collecting, caring for, and building model cars from three passionate collectors.
