Read these tips to enhance your experience at museum:

Accessibility: The museum gallery is one level. A powered lift to access the one exhibit including stairs was installed in November 2016. There is plenty of seating throughout the gallery; wheelchairs and scooters are available upon request.

Service Animals: Service animals are welcome throughout the entire museum!

Professional Aide: If a differently abled visitor is accompanied by a professional aide, the aide will be admitted at no additional cost. One aide per paying visitor.

Food & Drinks: Food and beverage are not permitted in the museum gallery, with the exception of water bottles that can be sealed with a lid or cap.

Oversized Bags: To ensure the safety of the collection, oversized bags and backpacks must be left in your vehicle or checked at the front desk.

Photography: Visitors to the museum are welcome to take photographs or videos.

Free Wi-Fi: All World of Speed visitors are welcome to help themselves to our complimentary free Wi-Fi connection.

Respecting the Exhibits: While we encourage you to engage with all of our exhibits, please avoid touching the vehicles and other memorabilia. Many of our exhibits are fragile, and natural oils on your skin could damage their surfaces. Touching or climbing in the vehicles is not permitted unless otherwise stated.

Parking: There is plenty of free parking at World of Speed, both in our large lot and on nearby streets.

Public Transportation: Public transportation available. Visit the TriMet website for bus routes and schedules.

Weather Closures: World of Speed follows the West Linn-Wilsonville school district schedule for weather-related closures. Check local radio and television stations for specific information on school closures. Museum closures will also be posted on our web and social media sites.

Accommodations: Looking for local accommodations? Check out our Community Partners page! World of Speed guests get discounted room rates at select area hotels.

Sensory-friendly Information

World of Speed works to meet the needs of all guests. Here are a few tips and resources for guests who may have sensory needs.

When to come:

World of Speed hosts school groups and other group tours. The museum also hosts a variety of family events throughout the year. While these events are fun and have activities for all ages, the number of people at the museum can make the museum galleries noisier and busier than at other times. You can call the Museum’s main number (503-563-6444) the day of your visit to ask about groups or other special events taking place. This will allow you to make an informed decision about the best time to visit.

Here are some timeframes when the museum is typically quieter:

–          Tuesday – Friday, 12:30 – 4:30 pm

–          Saturday and Sunday afternoons

Getting ready for your visit:

Check out World of Speed’s Social Story to know what to expect during a visit to the museum.

Equipment and materials available at the Museum:

World of Speed has a selection of sensory-friendly equipment available to use during your visit, free of charge. Supplies are limited and include:

–          Noise-canceling headphones

–          Weighted bracelets

–          Fidget toys

To take advantage of these offerings, just check with the Museum front desk. We will have a special card for the person who will be using the equipment to fill out, on which they select the options they would like to use by simply checking boxes. Adults and/or caretakers are welcome to help in the selection process. We also provide a knapsack to carry the equipment during your visit. Since supplies are limited, we recommend that larger groups with multiple sensory needs plan to bring their own supplies if possible. You may also call ahead to check on availability of items.

All borrowed equipment must be returned at the conclusion of your World of Speed visit.

The galleries:

The Museum galleries are typically on the quieter side and have several areas available to sit and watch videos as you take a break from walking and exploring the exhibits.

If you have a younger child with sensory needs, the one exception to the quiet of the galleries is the Start Line Club. This fun area has multiple hands-on activities and exhibits. It can also be overwhelming when multiple families are sharing the space. The room is self-contained with clear lines of sight in most directions. Many of the more popular activities (mini-simulator car game, Super Service Center) may require sharing and taking turns. These are just things to be aware of while playing in the area. If your child does get overwhelmed or feels uncomfortable sharing, feel free to take a break and head into the feature galleries and look around for a bit. This will allow you to be in a calmer, quieter environment for a while, and hopefully will allow the crowd in the Start Line Club to thin out as well. Both the feature galleries and the Start Line Club are included in general admission, so you may go back and forth as often as you like during your visit.

Staff and volunteers:

World of Speed staff and volunteers (staff usually wear black shirts or black jackets, volunteers wear light blue shirts) are here to help you. If you have any issues or needs that arise during your visit, please find one of these people and let them know. We will do our best to make your visit a positive experience.

Feedback:

Our guest services and education teams welcome feedback. If you have any ideas that you would like to share about how we can better serve you, please feel free to let someone at the front desk know or fill out a comment card. We want to hear from you!

We want to hear all about your visit!
