Q: When and how did you become a motorsports enthusiast?
I’ve been an automotive enthusiast since I was a child. I love cars — driving them, working on them, modifying them, looking at them, photographing them, listening to other car owners talking about them. This year, I went back to autocrossing them, after a 40-year hiatus called life.
Q: What kind of influence has that had on your life?
[Motorsports have] been a major influence. As an example, I’m retired and I volunteer both at World of Speed and at Portland Cars and Coffee. There are four autos in our household, 3 of which are Volkswagens (limited only by space for parking), and most weekends are booked with car shows, cruises, autocrosses, drag or dirt track races, and so on.

The group of close friends that I’ve made working here.

How incredibly awesome it is.
Q: If you could choose any vehicle to be displayed in the museum, what would it be?
Gilbert the Racing Bug — see picture. It lives here in Portland and is owned by a friend. It’s a vintage race car.
