The official document lists one qualifying round and shows each driver’s fastest recorded lap, speed, lap number, number of laps completed, gap to the fastest time and gap to the next position. Most drivers recorded two laps; several posted only one.
Blaney’s advantage looked small at the top, but the gaps stayed narrow well into the field. Michael McDowell in 11th was only 0.124 seconds off pole. Austin Cindric was 0.125 back, and Josh Berry was 0.128 behind.
Even 20th-place Chase Briscoe sat just 0.189 seconds behind Blaney. Briscoe’s position is especially interesting because he held the official Iowa Cup qualifying record entering the 2026 session. His 2025 mark remained untouched despite the field being packed tightly together.
Christopher Bell qualified 22nd at 23.674 seconds. Denny Hamlin was 29th, Alex Bowman 30th and Chase Elliott 32nd. Those positions gave several major names a much harder Sunday starting point than the leading Ford and Chevrolet entries.

For readers, the important point is not to recalculate or reorder the result. NASCAR Statistics is the classification of record used here. Therefore, Larson is the outside front-row starter and Logano owns the inside of Row 2.
The top 10 fit inside 0.121 seconds
Erik Jones qualified 10th with a 23.595-second lap. That was only 0.121 seconds slower than Blaney. Such a narrow window puts more pressure on execution because one small mistake can turn a potential front-row lap into a fifth-row start.
Ty Gibbs and Austin Dillon provide another example. Both were listed at 23.545 seconds and 133.786 mph. Gibbs was sixth and Dillon seventh. Connor Zilisch then arrived only 0.005 seconds later in eighth.
Bell, Hamlin and Elliott had work to do
Three high-profile names started well outside the front half. Bell qualified 22nd, Hamlin 29th and Elliott 32nd. On a short oval, that means traffic becomes part of the race plan immediately.
Starting deep changes the first-stage calculation. A driver must move forward without overusing the tires, while the leaders can settle into cleaner air. Iowa rewards a clean starting position, but tire management, restarts, traffic and pit timing can overturn the grid. The 2026 race provided a clear example: the winner did not start from pole.

Iowa Speedway Qualifying Record: Why Blaney Did Not Break It
The NASCAR Statistics sheet lists Chase Briscoe as the Iowa Speedway Cup qualifying record holder. His 2025 lap was 23.004 seconds at 136.933 mph. Blaney’s 2026 pole came at 23.474 seconds and 134.191 mph.
That makes the 2026 pole 0.470 seconds slower than the record lap. The speed difference was 2.742 mph. In percentage terms, Blaney’s lap time was roughly two percent slower than Briscoe’s record mark.
That gap does not make Blaney’s pole less legitimate. Qualifying speed changes with tire specification, track temperature, rubber, weather, setup direction and the amount of grip available at that exact moment. A pole only requires beating the field in the session being contested.

How the Iowa Qualifying Session Was Structured
The NASCAR Statistics document labels the session “Qualifying Round: 1.” Its columns show the fastest time, speed, which lap produced that time, total laps, gap to the fastest driver and gap to the next driver.
Blaney’s fastest lap came on Lap 2 of two. Larson and Logano set their best times on Lap 1. Keselowski, Dillon, Zilisch, Chastain, Hocevar, John Hunter Nemechek and several others were listed with only one completed timed lap on the sheet.
This matters because the first lap and second lap can behave differently at Iowa. A driver may need the opening circuit to build tire temperature and confidence. However, an aggressive first effort can already be the better lap if the second run loses grip.
The official NASCAR event schedule placed Cup practice and qualifying on Saturday, Aug. 8. NASCAR’s credential schedule listed practice from 1:05 to 1:55 p.m. local time and qualifying from 2:10 to 3:00 p.m. local time. The time-trial sheet itself was issued at 4:06 p.m. Eastern.

What Happened to the Qualifiers in the Race?
The grid was important, but Sunday proved why qualifying cannot be treated as a finishing-order forecast. Ty Gibbs started sixth and won the Iowa Corn 350. Christopher Bell started 22nd and climbed all the way to second.
Blaney converted pole into third place. More importantly, he led a race-high 129 laps and won Stage 1. Therefore, the No. 12’s qualifying speed did translate into genuine race pace even though it did not produce the victory.
Larson’s second-place start had a very different outcome. He was classified 33rd after completing 332 laps. Logano started third and finished 14th, while Keselowski started fourth and finished 27th.
Reddick’s fifth-place start ended almost immediately. He completed only three laps and was classified 36th after an accident. Meanwhile, Gibbs used the sixth starting spot as a platform for the winning run and led the final 20 laps.
Bell’s drive is the strongest argument against reading too much into a poor Saturday position. He started 22nd, won Stage 2, led 108 laps and finished second by only 0.253 seconds. That is a huge recovery on a track where every row costs distance at the green flag.

Why the first rows still mattered
Blaney’s early control was not accidental. Starting first gave him clean air and the freedom to choose his line without immediately fighting through traffic. He led the opening 93 laps, a direct example of how pole can simplify the first stage.

Iowa Speedway is a 0.875-mile paved oval in Newton, Iowa. The short lap is the first reason the field compresses. When the whole lap takes about 23 to 24 seconds, a tenth of a second represents a meaningful percentage of total lap time.

Second place often looks comfortable on a results list. It was not comfortable here. Larson was less than two hundredths from taking the first starting position, and his official speed was only 0.103 mph below Blaney’s.
