When was Spa-Francorchamps built?

The original road circuit was created in 1921. It used public roads linking Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot. The first Belgian Grand Prix at Spa took place in 1924, and Formula 1 arrived in 1950.

Spa began with a simple idea. Three roads through the Ardennes could form a natural triangle for racing.

Why was the original Spa circuit shortened?

The original 14.9-kilometer road course became too fast and dangerous for modern racing. The shorter 1979 layout removed long public-road sections while preserving Eau Rouge, Raidillon, the Kemmel area and Blanchimont.
