How O’Ward Won the Race

Lundgaard and O’Ward controlled the race from the start. Mid-Ohio ran caution-free, so traffic management, tire life and pit timing became more important than restarts. When Lundgaard drifted wide at Turn 2 on Lap 42, O’Ward generated a stronger run down the back straight, challenged around the outside at Turn 4 and completed the move before Thunder Valley.

O’Ward later passed rookie Dennis Hauger before the final pit cycle, giving him cleaner air and the flexibility to run two laps longer than Lundgaard. That sequence protected the lead after his stop and left Lundgaard without enough time to mount a final attack.

Race Start Times — International Conversion

Nashville changes the competitive problem completely. Mid-Ohio rewarded clean air and road-course precision; Nashville will demand oval traffic management, tire discipline, fuel-window planning and confidence in a high-speed pack. The race is also significantly longer in 2026, increasing the number of strategic decision points.

The official 2026 schedule contains 18 championship races. Mid-Ohio completed Round 11, leaving seven races across Nashville, Portland, Markham, Washington, Milwaukee and Laguna Seca.

Alex Palou remains the championship leader with 404 points. Kyle Kirkwood is second on 348, Christian Lundgaard third on 339 and David Malukas fourth on 338. O’Ward’s victory moved him to fifth with 310.

The points table is still led comfortably by Palou, but the gap behind him is compact. Kirkwood, Lundgaard and Malukas are separated by only 10 points, and Nashville offers a major opportunity because oval traffic and caution timing can create larger swings than a clean road-course race.

Every 2026 NTT IndyCar Series championship race airs on the FOX broadcast network. The next race at Nashville begins Sunday, July 19 at 5:30 PM ET. FOX One is the official streaming option identified on the IndyCar schedule, while participating live-TV services may provide local FOX access.

IndyCar uses one core chassis formula across three very different track types. Drivers must adapt from Mid-Ohio’s technical road course to Nashville’s high-speed concrete oval without changing championships or vehicles.

Road Courses

Tracks such as Mid-Ohio, Road America, Portland and Laguna Seca reward braking stability, tire management and aerodynamic balance through fast direction changes. Clean air is valuable, and passing often depends on generating a better exit before a long straight.

Street Circuits

St. Petersburg, Arlington, Long Beach, Detroit, Markham and Washington use temporary public-road layouts. Walls are close, grip changes quickly, and caution periods can heavily influence pit strategy.

Ovals

Phoenix, Indianapolis, World Wide Technology Raceway, Nashville and Milwaukee demand precise traffic management at sustained high speed. Slipstream effects, tire degradation and caution timing create different strategic risks from road racing.

Hybrid Power and Push-to-Pass

The current IndyCar package combines a turbocharged V6 with a hybrid energy-recovery system. On road and street courses, drivers can also use push-to-pass for temporary additional power. Oval rules and energy-management procedures differ by event.
